We work on the fixed installation rather than appliances, but part of the job is proving which of the two has failed, so you are not buying a new cooker to fix a circuit fault.
Yes. Flickering usually means a loose connection somewhere, and loose connections generate heat. It is much cheaper to find it early than after it has burnt an accessory out. See lighting faults.
Treat it as urgent if there is any heat, discolouration or smell at the board or an accessory. Otherwise it normally means one circuit has failed, and we can trace it with electrical fault finding.
For an emergency, someone needs to let us in and show us what happened. After that you are welcome to leave us to it. We will walk you through what we found before we go.

Telscombe is clifftop housing above the sea between Peacehaven and Saltdean. What that means underneath the plaster is a set of installations from very different decades. Properties left empty between lets, so small faults go unreported for months is the factor that shapes most of the emergency work we are called out for.
The housing runs to properties extended a room at a time, bungalows and chalet bungalows and holiday lets and second homes left empty for long spells, and each was wired to the standards of its day. Additions made since, from extensions to garden supplies, are often where the weak point turns out to be.
Tenure matters as much as age. Telscombe has its share of rented and leasehold property, and in those the fault can sit either in your own consumer unit or in a landlord circuit, so the first job is often working out which side of the line it is on.
Most of it arrives as power that drops out only when it rains. Once the circuits are tested the cause is usually obvious, and usually fixable there and then.
Landlords have a further duty: in England a rented home needs an EICR at least every five years and before a new tenancy. All work is tested to BS 7671.
Businesses get the same cover as households, including out-of-hours attendance so a fault does not cost a day of trading.
