Electrician rewiring a fuse board

WELCOME TO

Emergency electricians for Coventry homes, lets and workshops

Coventry was rebuilt at speed after the war, so much of the city is 1950s and 1960s housing sitting alongside Victorian terraces in Earlsdon and Stoke, interwar semis in Coundon and Cheylesmore, and newer estates on the outskirts. Each generation of wiring fails differently, and Power Pros are on call around the clock to work out which one is causing the trouble.

What we do

A great deal of Coventry runs on wiring installed during the post-war rebuild. Rewireable fuse boxes, no RCD protection, sockets fed by tired ring final circuits and the odd length of rubber-insulated cable left behind a part rewire all turn up in the 1950s and 1960s stock. Testing is what separates a circuit with years left from one that is done.

Concrete and steel-framed houses need a different approach. Where walls will not take a chase, circuits run in surface containment, and earthing and bonding wants checking rather than assumed.

Then there are the shared houses. Student lets around Earlsdon, Canley and Stoke carry far more load than the original design allowed for, so worn socket outlets, nuisance RCD tripping and overdue landlord EICRs are common findings.

We guarantee…

We will fault find and resolve the issue if it can be resolved on the spot. With 25 years experience in fault finding we believe there isn't an issue which we can't solve. Some issues may need a revisit due to the deterioration of the cabling, and where that happens we will always explain your options clearly before any further work begins.

Emergency Callouts

You can count on us for any electrical emergency. We are extremely confident in our abilities and we solve 85% of all electrical emergency callouts on the spot.

Condition Reports

All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use — commonly known as periodic inspection and testing.

Qualified Electricians

We are proud members of the NICEIC Part P scheme. Our electrical work is tested to BS7671 regulations and complies with the latest British Standards and Building Regulations.

Fuse Board Upgrades

Old fuse boxes and rewireable fuses can't protect you the way a modern consumer unit does. We supply, install and certify RCD-protected boards, with every circuit tested and labelled before we leave.

FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Question

All of our services are backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee and delivered by our qualified electricians.

Testing settles it rather than the age of the house. Insulation resistance, continuity and earth fault loop readings show whether the existing circuits will stand modern RCD or RCBO protection. Plenty of post-war stock was rewired in PVC in the 1970s or 1980s and is sound, while some still has original rubber-insulated cable behind the plaster. We test first, explain what the readings mean, and certify whatever is done to BS 7671.

This is common in Coventry's no-fines concrete and steel-framed post-war houses. Circuits are taken through loft and floor voids where possible, then dropped in surface conduit, trunking or skirting containment rather than cut into the structure. On steel-framed types the earthing and bonding arrangement is checked carefully as part of the work, because exposed metalwork and the main earthing terminal need to be properly tied together.

A private rented home in England needs an Electrical Installation Condition Report at least every five years, with a copy given to tenants and any C1, C2 or FI items put right. A licensed HMO also brings duties around fire alarm and emergency lighting systems. Beyond the paperwork, shared kitchens and bedrooms with several appliances each load ring final circuits far harder than a family home, which is worth allowing for at inspection.

Stop using that socket or circuit and, if you can do so safely, switch off at the main switch on the consumer unit. Please do not open the fuse box, a socket outlet or any accessory, and never try to work on it live. Ring us instead. Overheating at a socket, a scorch mark or a board that trips straight back off are all things that want testing before power is restored.

Callouts are priced by time of day: £110 basic between 9:30am and 3pm, £130 day, £180 early evening and £250 overnight. Anything beyond that is quoted and agreed with you before it starts. Power Pros are NICEIC Part P scheme members and City & Guilds qualified, insured to £2,000,000, with 25 years of fault finding behind us and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Every callout includes a visual inspection and circuit testing.

Electrical emergency?

Electrical emergencies in Coventry rarely arrive at a convenient hour. A board that will not reset in a Tile Hill semi, a burning smell near a socket in a Foleshill terrace, half a student house in darkness the night before a deadline. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Every callout starts the same way, whatever the property. A visual inspection, then circuit testing, so the fault is identified rather than guessed at. Around 85% of emergency callouts are resolved on the first visit, and all work is tested to BS 7671.

Callout pricing is fixed by time of day: £110 basic between 9:30am and 3pm, £130 day, £180 early evening, £250 overnight. Any extra work is quoted and agreed with you first.

ELECTRICS IN COVENTRY

What the wiring is really like in Coventry

Coventry lost much of its centre and inner housing in 1940, and the rebuild that followed set the tone for the city's wiring. Whole districts went up quickly in the 1950s and 1960s at Tile Hill, Canley, Willenhall, Bell Green and Wood End, some of it poured no-fines concrete or steel-framed. Around it sit interwar semis in Coundon, Cheylesmore and Wyken, and Victorian terraces that survived in Earlsdon, Chapelfields, Stoke and Foleshill.

That mix shows up at the fuse box. Post-war houses were first wired in rubber-insulated cable, rewired once in the 1970s or 1980s, and often sit on a rewireable board or an early split-load unit where one RCD takes out half the house. Solid concrete walls will not take a chase, so circuits are run in surface trunking. In the older terraces the meter usually sits under the stairs or in a cellar, with extensions and loft rooms added to circuits never designed for them.

Two universities give Coventry an unusually large rented sector. Shared houses cluster in Earlsdon, Canley, Cannon Park, Stoke and Hillfields, and high occupancy is hard on wiring: ring final circuits loaded well beyond what the original design assumed, worn socket outlets, and RCDs tripping on tired kitchen appliances. Private lets in England need an EICR at least every five years, and licensed HMOs carry alarm and emergency lighting duties on top.

The city's motor and machine-tool past left small works units and converted factory buildings, many on three-phase supplies with ageing distribution boards. On the fringes, newer estates at Binley, Bannerbrook and Eastern Green have RCBO boards now taking EV chargers, solar and heat pumps.
