No. There is no call-out charge and our rates are the same evenings, weekends and bank holidays. The price is agreed with you before any work starts.
Yes. Long submains out to garages, workshops and annexes are a common source of faults, especially where the cable is buried or has been extended over the years. We test the run and repair or replace as needed.
A board that trips is doing its job. It is usually a faulty appliance, water where it should not be, or a damaged cable. Testing identifies the circuit, and where an old board puts everything on one RCD, moving to RCBOs means only the faulty circuit goes off next time. See RCD tripping.
We make it safe, explain what we have found and give you the options in writing. That might be a partial rewire of one circuit rather than the whole property, or consumer unit replacement where the board is the weak point.
Switch that circuit off at the board, stop using it and call us. Heat and smell mean a connection is failing, which is the kind of job covered under burning smells and dangerous electrics, and we treat it as an emergency.

Henfield has an old village High Street with modern housing around it. What that means underneath the plaster is a set of installations from very different decades. Commercial premises with flats above, where circuits were split without a clean separation is the factor that shapes most of the emergency work we are called out for.
The housing runs to Victorian and Edwardian terraces, inter-war and post-war housing on the edges and flats carved out of former commercial floors, and each was wired to the standards of its day. Additions made since, from extensions to garden supplies, are often where the weak point turns out to be.
Empty periods do their own damage. Property that stands unused, whether between lets or over a winter, tends to hide small faults until everything is switched on at once.
Most of it arrives as a flat above a commercial unit losing power with no obvious cause. Once the circuits are tested the cause is usually obvious, and usually fixable there and then.
Landlords have a further duty: in England a rented home needs an EICR at least every five years and before a new tenancy. All work is tested to BS 7671.
