Crowborough is a town of large detached houses, Victorian villas and rural plots on some of the highest ground in the Weald, and plenty of them run on electricity for heating as well as everything else. It can be either, and on high ground with overhead lines and mature trees both are common. If the whole lane is dark it is usually a network fault and your distribution operator will be dealing with it. If your property alone is off, or the supply returns and the board will not stay on, that points at something inside the installation and wants testing.
With the off-peak side of the installation. Cold storage heating often traces back to the timeswitch or meter contactor, the off-peak radial itself, the charge controller or a failed element rather than the heater as a whole. We test the circuit and the switching before recommending anything, because replacing heaters that were never getting a supply solves nothing.
Long buried submains are a common weak point on Crowborough's larger plots. Faults tend to sit at the glands and joints where water gets in, or at points where the armoured cable has been caught by a spade or a fence post. We test the submain end to end, check the earthing and bonding and the RCD protection at the origin, then tell you whether it can be repaired or wants replacing.
It is worth assessing. BS 7671 asks for a risk assessment on new work, and overhead-fed properties on exposed ground see more transients than a town street on underground cable. Where there is a lot of vulnerable equipment, such as heating controls, LED drivers, EV charging and a home office, a surge protective device at the consumer unit is a sensible addition.
An emergency here rarely turns up on a mild afternoon. Crowborough sits high and open, catching wind and snow the lower Weald misses, and much of its supply still runs overhead through wooded lanes. When the lights go out in a gale it is not always the network at fault; a soaked outdoor accessory or a surged board is just as likely.
Cold bites harder where the heating is electric. A tripped off-peak circuit in February leaves a house with no heat at all until it is traced, and in a big detached property with a converted loft and two extensions the fault is seldom on the board you can see.

ELECTRICS IN CROWBOROUGH
Crowborough took its modern shape after the railway arrived in the late 1860s and the town was sold as a bracing, high-ground alternative to the coast. That left generous Victorian and Edwardian villas on large plots near the Beacon and the common, older cottages and terraces down in the Jarvis Brook valley, then wave after wave of interwar bungalows, 1960s and 1970s estate housing and newer developments on the edges.
The villas have usually been rewired more than once, and remnants of rubber or lead-sheathed cable can still be found feeding a landing light or an old bell transformer. Big houses also collect boards: an extension here, a garage conversion there, a loft done in the 1990s, until there are two or three consumer units, mixed cable colours and circuits nobody has ever labelled. Plenty of the 1960s and 1970s stock is still on a rewireable fuse box or an early split-load board where a single RCD takes out half the house.
Height and trees do the rest. The town stands on an exposed Wealden ridge with Ashdown Forest on its doorstep, so gales bring branches down on overhead lines, and frost and snow linger after they have cleared elsewhere. External lighting, gate motors and outbuilding supplies take the brunt of it.
Away from the centre, properties run their own infrastructure: treatment plant and borehole pumps, stables, workshops and home offices at the end of a long submain. Many are TT earthed, so RCD protection and electrode readings matter more than they do on a town street, and farm cottages, annexes and let bungalows all need a current EICR.
