You are told the price before we start, and there is no call-out fee on top of it. If the job turns out to be larger than expected we stop and agree the change with you first.
Switch that circuit off at the board, stop using it and call us. Heat and smell mean a connection is failing, which is the kind of job covered under burning smells and dangerous electrics, and we treat it as an emergency.
We work on the fixed installation rather than appliances, but part of the job is proving which of the two has failed, so you are not buying a new cooker to fix a circuit fault.
Yes. Flickering usually means a loose connection somewhere, and loose connections generate heat. It is much cheaper to find it early than after it has burnt an accessory out. See lighting faults.
Treat it as urgent if there is any heat, discolouration or smell at the board or an accessory. Otherwise it normally means one circuit has failed, and we can trace it with electrical fault finding.

Commercial premises with flats above, where circuits were split without a clean separation is the factor that shapes most of the emergency work we are called out for.
The housing runs to flats carved out of former commercial floors, period houses under conservation control and listed and period buildings in the centre, many with flats above shops, and each was wired to the standards of its day. Additions made since, from extensions to garden supplies, are often where the weak point turns out to be.
Age is only half of it. The other half is load: kitchens, showers and heating that draw far more than the original design allowed for, on circuits that were never uprated to match.
What that produces, in practice, is a flat above a commercial unit losing power with no obvious cause. It is rarely mysterious once the circuits are tested, and it is usually repairable on the first visit.
Landlords have a further duty: in England a rented home needs an EICR at least every five years and before a new tenancy. All work is tested to BS 7671.
We would always rather look at something early. A flickering light or a socket that feels warm is a cheap visit now and an expensive one later.
