Salt-laden air corrodes metalwork and terminals, and Newhaven takes it straight off the Channel. Outdoor socket outlets, isolators, cable glands and fittings that are not properly sealed let moisture in, which often shows up as an RCD tripping in wet weather. We test the circuit, trace where the water is getting in and fit accessories suitable for a coastal position, tested to BS 7671.

A south-westerly gale drives rain into external accessories and gable-end lights, the RCD lets go at two in the morning, and the whole ground floor goes dark. NEWHAVEN, EAST SUSSEX
Newhaven grew around its harbour and the railway, so the older core is Victorian and Edwardian terracing: solid brick, no cavity, meters tucked in cellars or narrow hallways, and rear extensions added piecemeal. In houses of that age it is still possible to find rubber or lead-sheathed cable surviving behind skirtings and in loft voids, usually on lighting that a partial rewire never quite reached.
Around that core sit large post-war and 1960s estates on the valley sides, along with newer flats near the harbour. Most estate houses were rewired once, decades ago, and now carry modern loads on old circuits: electric showers, induction hobs and car chargers on installations designed for a kettle and a two-bar fire. An EICR is the honest way to find out where the headroom really is.
Newhaven sits at the mouth of the Ouse in a valley cut through chalk, and takes the weather straight off the Channel. Salt in the air eats outdoor accessories, cable glands, external isolators and meter box hinges far faster than a few miles inland, and wind-driven rain finds anything that is not properly sealed.
