Electrical repairs for Newhaven homes, flats and harbour-side units

Newhaven mixes Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the old town with large post-war estates on the valley sides, plus workshops and marine units along the harbour. Each throws up different faults. Power Pros handle all of it: fault finding, consumer unit work, sockets, lighting and EICRs, 24 hours a day, with every callout including a visual inspection and circuit testing.

What we do

Salt-laden air off the Channel is hard on anything mounted outside. In Newhaven that means corroded outdoor socket outlets and isolators, seized security lights, rusting meter boxes and powdery green terminals in external enclosures. Damp follows the corrosion in, and an RCD that trips in wet weather is often the first sign.

Indoors, the older terraces near the High Street still turn up rewireable fuse boxes, socket circuits with no RCD protection, and main protective bonding that was never brought up to current sizes. Testing shows what is genuinely there before anything is replaced.

On the post-war estates, 1970s and 1980s rewires have often run out of road: overloaded ring final circuits, worn socket outlets in kitchens, lighting points with no circuit protective conductor. A consumer unit change to RCBOs puts protection back circuit by circuit, tested to BS 7671.

We guarantee…

We will fault find and resolve the issue if it can be resolved on the spot. With 25 years experience in fault finding we believe there isn't an issue which we can't solve. Some issues may need a revisit due to the deterioration of the cabling, and where that happens we will always explain your options clearly before any further work begins.

Emergency Callouts

You can count on us for any electrical emergency. We are extremely confident in our abilities and we solve 85% of all electrical emergency callouts on the spot.

Condition Reports

All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use — commonly known as periodic inspection and testing.

Qualified Electricians

We are proud members of the NICEIC Part P scheme. Our electrical work is tested to BS7671 regulations and complies with the latest British Standards and Building Regulations.

Fuse Board Upgrades

Old fuse boxes and rewireable fuses can't protect you the way a modern consumer unit does. We supply, install and certify RCD-protected boards, with every circuit tested and labelled before we leave.

FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Question

All of our services are backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee and delivered by our qualified electricians.

Yes. Power Pros cover Bexhill-on-Sea, Hastings, Eastbourne and all of East Sussex, and Newhaven is included: the old town, Denton, the valley-side estates and the industrial and marine units down by the harbour. We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 0333 360 8583.

Salt-laden air corrodes metalwork and terminals, and Newhaven takes it straight off the Channel. Outdoor socket outlets, isolators, cable glands and fittings that are not properly sealed let moisture in, which often shows up as an RCD tripping in wet weather. We test the circuit, trace where the water is getting in and fit accessories suitable for a coastal position, tested to BS 7671.

Whoever gets to the phone first. In converted buildings in the older part of Newhaven, several flats often sit behind one origin, so a fault in one can pull the supply from the rest. We isolate the affected circuit so most of the building gets power back, then find the fault properly. We are happy to report to a tenant, landlord or managing agent, and any extra work beyond the callout is quoted and agreed first.

It is an inspection and test of the fixed wiring: consumer unit, circuits, earthing and bonding, socket outlets and lighting, written up as a report with any C1, C2 or C3 observations. In terraces of that age the common findings are rewireable fuse boxes, socket circuits without RCD protection and undersized main protective bonding to the incoming water and gas. The report tells you what genuinely needs doing and what does not.

Yes. Newhaven has far more boat stores, workshops and light industrial units than most towns its size, and they bring different faults: condensation inside distribution boards in unheated buildings, three-phase supplies feeding machinery, and long submains running out to sheds and stores. We are NICEIC Part P scheme members, City & Guilds qualified and insured to £2,000,000, with 25 years of experience in fault finding.

Electrical emergency?

An emergency here rarely arrives politely. A south-westerly gale drives rain into external accessories and gable-end lights, the RCD lets go at two in the morning, and the whole ground floor goes dark. Low-lying properties near the river and harbour also have to think about water reaching meter cupboards, cellars and under-stair boards.

Tenure matters too. Newhaven has a lot of rented houses and flats above shops in the old town, where one failed circuit can leave several households without power and the landlord is not on the doorstep. We are happy to deal with tenant, landlord or managing agent, whoever calls first.

Power Pros answer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a one hour response and callout prices fixed by time of day. Any extra work is quoted and agreed before it starts.

NEWHAVEN, EAST SUSSEX

Why wiring in Newhaven works harder

Newhaven grew around its harbour and the railway, so the older core is Victorian and Edwardian terracing: solid brick, no cavity, meters tucked in cellars or narrow hallways, and rear extensions added piecemeal. In houses of that age it is still possible to find rubber or lead-sheathed cable surviving behind skirtings and in loft voids, usually on lighting that a partial rewire never quite reached.

Around that core sit large post-war and 1960s estates on the valley sides, along with newer flats near the harbour. Most estate houses were rewired once, decades ago, and now carry modern loads on old circuits: electric showers, induction hobs and car chargers on installations designed for a kettle and a two-bar fire. An EICR is the honest way to find out where the headroom really is.

Newhaven sits at the mouth of the Ouse in a valley cut through chalk, and takes the weather straight off the Channel. Salt in the air eats outdoor accessories, cable glands, external isolators and meter box hinges far faster than a few miles inland, and wind-driven rain finds anything that is not properly sealed. Nearer the river, low ground and tidal flood risk make the height and position of boards and socket outlets worth a second thought.

The marine and industrial units add their own list: unheated workshops where condensation forms inside distribution boards, three-phase supplies feeding machinery, and long submain runs out to stores and boat sheds.

  • Salt corrosion at outdoor socket outlets, isolators and security lighting
  • Rewireable fuse boxes and socket circuits with no RCD protection in older terraces
  • EICRs for rented houses and flats above the town centre shops
  • Condensation and damp in harbour-side workshops, garages and stores
  • Long submain runs to outbuildings on steep valley-side plots
  • Earthing and bonding checks where the supply is TT with an earth rod
