Electrician rewiring a fuse board

WELCOME TO

Emergency electricians for Lewes homes, flats and shops

Lewes packs timber-framed Tudor frontages, Georgian townhouses, Victorian terraces and post-war estates into a few steep streets, so no two fuse boxes here look alike. Power Pros find and fix electrical faults in all of them - dead circuits, tripping RCDs, burning smells, failed lighting - with a visual inspection and circuit testing on every callout, day or night.

What we do

Much of the wiring in Lewes sits behind lath and plaster, lime render or solid flint walls, with no cavity to work in. Faults are traced by testing rather than by opening up, and repairs planned to disturb as little of the fabric as possible.

Cellars and undercrofts are common here, and that is often where the meter and consumer unit ended up. Damp and condensation are hard on old boards and steel enclosures, so corroded terminals, tired RCDs and questionable earthing and bonding turn up regularly in older Lewes properties.

Then there are the split-level plots that step up the chalk slopes: long submains out to garden rooms, studios and workshops, often buried years ago and never tested since. We test what is there, make it safe, and quote anything beyond the callout before starting.

We guarantee…

We will fault find and resolve the issue if it can be resolved on the spot. With 25 years experience in fault finding we believe there isn't an issue which we can't solve. Some issues may need a revisit due to the deterioration of the cabling, and where that happens we will always explain your options clearly before any further work begins.

Emergency Callouts

You can count on us for any electrical emergency. We are extremely confident in our abilities and we solve 85% of all electrical emergency callouts on the spot.

Condition Reports

All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use — commonly known as periodic inspection and testing.

Qualified Electricians

We are proud members of the NICEIC Part P scheme. Our electrical work is tested to BS7671 regulations and complies with the latest British Standards and Building Regulations.

Fuse Board Upgrades

Old fuse boxes and rewireable fuses can't protect you the way a modern consumer unit does. We supply, install and certify RCD-protected boards, with every circuit tested and labelled before we leave.

FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Question

All of our services are backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee and delivered by our qualified electricians.

Yes. Emergency repairs and testing are the same job in a listed building as anywhere else, but the routes matter: chasing lime plaster or fixing surface containment to historic fabric can need listed building consent, which is a matter between the owner and Lewes District Council. We work with what is already there wherever we can, and agree anything invasive with you before starting.

It can. Where water has reached socket outlets, cable ends or a consumer unit, corrosion settles into the terminals and moisture can track through cable long after everything looks dry. It often shows up as an RCD that trips for no obvious reason. We would not assume it of any particular installation - a visual inspection and circuit testing on the affected circuits is what confirms it.

It is a very Lewes situation, because cellars and undercrofts here often hold the meter and the consumer unit. Damp and condensation are hard on steel enclosures and terminations, and older boards fare worst of all. It is not automatically dangerous, but it is worth testing. If a board needs replacing or moving to drier ground, that is quoted and agreed before any work begins.

Rented homes in England need an EICR at least every five years, and that applies to a flat over a shop just as much as to a house. Mixed-use buildings add a wrinkle: supplies and circuits are often shared or split between the commercial unit and the flat above, so it is worth establishing which circuits belong to which before testing rather than during it.

Power Pros cover all of East Sussex, including the villages around Lewes such as Ringmer, Barcombe, Glynde and Kingston, and lines are open 24/7 with a 1 hour response as our company-wide standard. Callout prices are fixed by the time of day: £110 basic between 9:30am and 3pm (not guaranteed within the hour), £130 day, £180 early evening and £250 overnight. Any extra work is quoted and agreed first.

Electrical emergency?

Lewes sits in the gap where the Ouse cuts through the Downs, and weather funnels straight through it. A wet, windy night can put water into a cellar, take out the supply to an outbuilding, or leave a whole ground floor dark.

The town's flood history matters too. Where circuits, sockets or boards have been under water at any point, corrosion and moisture can sit quietly in terminals and cable for years before a circuit finally trips and stays off. Testing is the only way to tell.

Plenty of Lewes homes and flats are rented or let short-term, and a fault at 11pm still needs someone that night. Power Pros are available 24/7 with a 1 hour response as our company-wide standard, and callout prices are fixed by the time of day before we set off.

Every callout includes

  • Turning up the same day
  • Visual inspection
  • Testing the circuit

…and if we can resolve and fix or (identify the issue if the circuit needs rewiring). The cost ends there.

We have structured our pricing in 4 easy categories, so the customer and ourselves understand the costs involved.

LEWES, EAST SUSSEX

Old fabric, steep ground and the Ouse: electrics in Lewes

Lewes sits inside one of the largest conservation areas in the county, with timber-framed Tudor buildings on the High Street and Georgian fronts faced in mathematical tiles. Behind them there are no cavities and few straight runs, so cables have been threaded wherever they would go, with later additions layered over earlier work.

Around that core, Victorian terraces climb Southover and the Wallands, post-war housing fills Landport and the Neville, and newer flats sit near the river. In the oldest homes, rubber-insulated cable and rewireable fuse boards still survive where a house has stayed in one family for decades; testing shows what is safe to keep.

The Ouse has flooded Lewes before, and the low ground at the Cliffe, Malling and South Street carries that history. Where water has reached ground-floor circuits or a cellar board, the damage tends to be slow, surfacing later as nuisance tripping or a circuit that will not reset.

Beyond the town the picture changes again: downland cottages, converted barns and long rural supply runs, often on a TT earthing arrangement that depends on an earth electrode and a working RCD. In the centre, flats above the shops on Cliffe High Street bring shared supplies and landlord testing into the mix.

  • Consumer unit work where the fuse box sits in a damp cellar or understairs cupboard
  • Rewires planned around listed fabric, lath and plaster and lime finishes
  • Landlord EICRs for flat conversions and rooms above town-centre shops
  • Earthing and bonding checks on TT supplies at outlying cottages and barns
  • Circuit testing in properties that have taken flood water at any point
  • Submains and RCD protection for garden rooms up the terraced slopes
